Knives of Alaska Hunters Hatchet Product Review

The Knives of Alaska Hunters Hatchet is a S7 steel, 11 inch long hatchet.

Made in the USA, the Hunter’s Hatchet is a reliable, portable, tool at just 16.7 oz.  The relative lightness of this product doesn’t mean that Knives of Alaska disregarded quality.

The Hatchet is study and strong, and its 4.25 inch long blade sharp and ready to go.  That’s right, there is no need to refine the cutting edge.  The manufactures treat their tools with Cryogenically tempering, which is what gives this hatchet its hardened, fine edge.  The blade is so sharp, one could even shave with it!

The bevel is 22 – 25° and the wood handle made from red hickory.  This handle is hand-rubbed and oil-finished, and comfortable to hold; adequate grip is possible thanks to the semi-straight curve of the belly and throat, giving the hatchet the feel of an axe.

A survivalist can easily chop firewood with the Hunter’s Hatchet, but, as its name indicates, it was made for field dressing.  One might not be able to fell a tree quickly and easily with this tool, but butchering bones is a walk in the park.  Not a part of its specifications, but this hatchet can also conveniently serve as an emergency hammer.

Due to its small size, the Hatchet can be stored anywhere.  We would have liked to receive a belt sheath in this package, for hand-free packing and as to not add weight to the overall camping load on our back, but, unfortunately, that accessory is sold separately.

Given the current global situation, Knives of Alaska may take 4 to 6 weeks to ship this item, so it’s important to keep that in mind when planning the next camping trip.  Although it isn’t an ideal shipping time frame, we are glad the manufacturer is forthright about it.

As matter of fact, one of the great advantages of purchasing a Knives of Alaska product is their lifetime warranty.  Considering a hatchet is a product that will no doubt receive abuse, it’s neat to know that the company stands by their tools and will cover any manufactory defects and breakage from normal use and wear.

Overall, we are happy with this Hunters Hatchet.  With a price tag that won’t break the bank, this durable tool has the right combination of looks, functionality, and quality.  It’s hefty, yet relatively lightweight, and no doubt a basic item in any survivalist’s kit.

Summary

With a hardness of 50-54 on the Rockwell scale, the Knives of Alaska Hunters Hatchet proves to be strong, useful little tool everyone should have.

After using this product, we were pleased with how easily it chopped wood and axed bones, and we are sure it would be a great addition to any backpacker’s bag.

The lifetime warranty and great costumer service provided by Knives of Alaska gives us the confidence that the Hunter’s Hatchet is a tool worth acquiring.
